Their motivation was simple, the animals needed them.

January 2009
Meet Princess a PMU mare, pregnant, filthy and waiting to go to slaughter. She was SWR's first rescue and here is her story.

It all began on a Saturday afternoon, Candi didn't know that this could quite possibly be one of the hardest days of her life. She had plans to go undercover for a documentary exposing the horrors of horse slaughter. Armed with a hidden camera in her purse, she was going to visit a feed lot where hundreds of horses are held before they are shipped out illegally to slaughter. As soon as she drove up a starved and filthy pregnant P.M.U. Palomino mare starting calling out to her at the top of her lungs. There were several hundred horses there, but this mare was determined to get her attention. Candi's heart sunk as she approached, fighting back the tears. Candi gently put her arms around the neck of the mare as she begged Candi to help her. Candi asked the mare when was she going to have the baby, she said NOW!!! Candi promised her at that moment she would come back and save her and her baby. The next morning when Candi arrived her foal (Jazz) had just been born. Quite a miracle to behold. She quickly cleaned up the foal and loaded her and mama into the trailer for transport. Paid the bail for their current meat market price, and took them home. With the birth of Baby Jazz, so was The Sweet Water Ranch Inc. Princess was rehabilitated and was able to live out another year at our sanctuary. We were very grateful that she at least got to spend all that time with her baby. She helped Jazz everyday to grow up strong and beautiful using all that she had left to give. Such a strong compassionate mare right to the end. She was a true 4 legged role model of devoted motherhood.

Baby Jazz less than an hour old, born at the feed lot.

Princess @ 25 years old rehabilitated. We were glad that she got to spend at least one year with Jazz before her past as a P.M.U mare had taken its toll. She suffered kidney failure and was humanely euthanized on 12/14/09. Her memory will live on forever @ SWR and in her daughter's spirit. RIP angel Princess.
